This Should Not Be One of the Reason You Decided to Do The Big Chop

1) Your friends are going natural.

2) You are upset and very emotional and just sick of everything and everybody.

3) It’s the trend right now.

4) You won’t have to do your hair every day.

5) You think you have a lot of hair damage.

I believe you have be to in a certain mental space when you decide to do the big chop (cut your hair off). Although you may think cutting your hair is the solution at the moment, a couple months down the road that solution may not have been your true solution. Just like with any new endeavor, hair requires work. You still have to maintain your hair just like everything else. In fact, maintaining natural hair requires a little more attention. But if you are up for the challenge, by all means go for it!

Keep in mind, natural hair is more delicate and more apt to get damaged if the hair is not properly moisturized or has low porosity. Porosity is how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. Porosity is affected by the elasticity (flexibility) of the outer hair layer (cuticle), which determines how easily moisture and oils pass in and out of your hair. Natural hair requires more deep conditioning treatments, and moisturizers rich in emollients such as hair butters and oils.

Be prepared for unruly hair days and days when the humidity is really high which causes your hair to swell and look like a matted poodle. Your beautiful flat twists curls may have to go back into flat twist until the weather eases up.

You have to mentally prepare yourself for the opinions that others my try to project onto you about how they feel about natural hair and hear how the natural hair thing did not work for them. They may try to project their negative experience with natural hair onto you.

Whatever your decision is for doing the big chop, make sure you did it because it’s what you decided to do. Not because it’s the trend right now, not because your friend is doing it, not because you are an emotional wreck at the moment.
